Breville BES870XL vs. BES920XL Comparison Table
The quality of an espresso shot depends on precise temperature and pressure. That’s why the heating technology is one of the most important aspects of an espresso machine.
Breville Barista Express BES870XL and The Dual Boiler BES920XL offer different heating technologies.
The heating system inside of the Breville BES870XL is Thermocoil which is an integrated stainless steel water coil accurately controls water temperature.
On the other hand, Breville BES920XL has dual stainless steel boiler. That means a separate system boiler offers powerful and instant steam on demand so this boost the quality of your espresso shot.
Both BES870XL and BES920XL have PID control for temperature stability.
As mentioned in the previous section, the pressure system is the other most important factor for an espresso machine.
Breville BES920XL has an Over Pressure Valve (OPV) like the commercial espresso machines. OPV limits the maximum pressure throughout the extraction. This feature prevents bitter flavours in the espresso shot.
BES870XL and BES920XL can produce 15 bars of pressure by an Italian-manufactured pump. They both also have low-pressure pre-infusion to increase the pressure gradually at the start in order to get a more even extraction.
Additionally, both Breville BES870XL and BES920XL have an espresso pressure gauge.
Both BES870XL and BES920XL feature an adjustable stainless steel steam wand that can swivel 360-degrees for milk frothing.
Breville BES870XL includes an inbuilt stainless steel conical burr grinder. The bean hopper has a 1/2lb capacity for coffee beans.
The grinder is fully adjustable for the size and the dose of the grind so that you can experience different tastes easily.
Breville BES920XL doesn’t have an integrated grinder. So that, you will need a separate coffee bean grinder with the BES920XL.
The capacity of the water tank is 2.0Lt (67 fl. oz.) in Breville BES870XL whereas 2.5Lt (84 fl. oz.) in Breville BES920XL.
Cup Warmer Tray
Cup warmer is a great feature to keep your espresso warm longer. Both Breville BES870XL (seen in the photo below) and BES920XL have cup warmer tray on the top of the machine.
Integrated & Removable Tamper
The tamper is the feature to apply even and consistent pressure to the espresso grinds. Both Breville BES870XL and BES920XL have integrated and removable tamper. The diameters of their tampers are slightly different because of the difference in their head size.
The tamper of the BES870XL is 54mm whereas BES920XL is 58mm.
How Water Outlet
Both Breville BES870XL and BES920XL have a dedicated hot water outlet which provides preparing Americano easily.
